BREAKING: Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay as Trade Dispute Reaches Breaking Point

The Detroit Red Wings’ ongoing situation with Dylan Larkin has reached a breaking point.

Detroit officially suspended its former captain without pay Thursday after Larkin informed the organization that he would no longer play for the team, according to a statement released by interim general manager Shawn Horcoff.

The announcement represents a dramatic escalation in a dispute that has been developing since Larkin requested a trade during the offseason.

“Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings,” Horcoff said in the organization’s statement. “We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.”

The organization also confirmed that it will continue exploring trade opportunities involving the veteran forward. However, Horcoff made clear that Detroit will not move Larkin simply to resolve the situation.

“In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization’s long-term goals,” Horcoff said.

How Did We Get Here?

Larkin’s relationship with the organization has been under scrutiny for months.

The longtime Detroit forward reportedly requested a trade during the offseason after growing frustrated with the direction of the franchise. The situation became public, and the organization subsequently announced that Larkin would no longer serve as team captain, a position he had held since January 2021.

Despite the unresolved situation, Larkin reported to training camp and began the regular season with Detroit.

However, the tension continued.

On Thursday, head coach Todd McLellan confirmed that Larkin would not play against the Chicago Blackhawks. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet subsequently reported that Larkin had decided to sit out until a trade was completed.

Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, also addressed the situation.

“Dylan’s had enough of the situation,” Brisson said in a statement reported by Pierre LeBrun. He added that Larkin had been professional and cooperative throughout the process.

The Red Wings then made their position official by announcing the suspension.

What Does This Mean for Detroit?

This situation creates a significant challenge for the Red Wings’ front office.

Larkin is not an ordinary roster player. He has been one of the organization’s most recognizable players and an important part of its leadership structure for years.

The 30-year-old center has recorded six points through 10 games this season. He has five seasons remaining on the eight-year, $69.6 million contract he signed with Detroit in March 2023, carrying an $8.7 million average annual value.

Trading a player of Larkin’s caliber is complicated enough. Doing so while balancing his approval rights, contractual obligations and Detroit’s demand for a meaningful return makes the situation even more difficult.

The organization has two competing responsibilities: protect its long-term interests and find a resolution that allows the team to move forward.

MCSN TAKE: Detroit Cannot Afford to Give Away Its Leverage

Let’s be clear: this is an ugly situation for both sides.

Larkin wants out, and according to his representatives, he believes he has given the organization enough time to make that happen.

Detroit, meanwhile, has every reason to demand a return that reflects the value of a top-six center with multiple years remaining on his contract.

The Red Wings cannot allow frustration or public pressure to dictate a bad trade.

But there is another side to this.

A prolonged standoff does nothing to help a franchise trying to become competitive again. The organization needs clarity, direction and a roster capable of moving forward.

Detroit must find a resolution, but it must be the right resolution.

The biggest question now isn’t whether Larkin wants to remain in Detroit. His reported decision has made that increasingly clear.

The question is what the Red Wings can get in return—and whether management can turn an increasingly difficult situation into an opportunity to improve the franchise.

What Happens Next?

For now, Larkin remains suspended without pay, and no trade has been announced.

Detroit says it will continue exploring trade opportunities, but any potential destination must be approved by Larkin, and the return must satisfy the organization’s long-term objectives.

Until a deal is reached, the situation remains one of the biggest developing stories in Detroit sports.

Motor City Sports Network will continue monitoring the situation for updates from the Red Wings, Larkin’s representatives and established NHL reporters.
