Pistons Erase 22-Point Deficit, Stun Celtics 121–113 in Dramatic Season-Opening Comeback

Javonte Green and Duncan Robinson spark Detroit’s fourth-quarter surge as the Pistons open the 2026–27 NBA season with a statement victory.

DETROIT, Mich. — October 20, 2026 — The Detroit Pistons couldn’t have scripted a more dramatic start to the 2026–27 NBA season.

Trailing the Boston Celtics by as many as 22 points in the third quarter, Detroit stormed back for a stunning 121–113 victory Tuesday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena.

What looked like a disappointing opening day turned into an unforgettable comeback, fueled by clutch three-point shooting, defensive energy and a remarkable fourth-quarter turnaround.

From 22 Down to Victory

Boston appeared to have complete control early in the third quarter.

The Celtics built a 72–50 advantage behind a spectacular performance from offseason acquisition Paul George.

But Detroit refused to fold.

The Pistons chipped away at the deficit throughout the third quarter, cutting Boston’s lead to six entering the final period.

Then everything changed.

Detroit unleashed a 23–0 fourth-quarter run, turning a 99–89 deficit into a 112–99 advantage.

The Celtics never recovered.

Javonte Green Delivers Off the Bench

One of the game’s biggest surprises came from veteran forward Javonte Green.

After not playing in the first half, Green provided the spark Detroit desperately needed.

He finished with 19 points, connecting on five three-pointers and bringing energy to both ends of the floor.

Duncan Robinson was equally important, scoring 21 points and knocking down five three-pointers.

Their perimeter shooting helped transform Detroit’s offense during the comeback.

Cunningham and Duren Lead the Way

Cade Cunningham finished with 22 points and eight assists, helping guide Detroit through its second-half rally.

Jalen Duren added 22 points and nine rebounds, providing a strong presence around the basket.

Ausar Thompson contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Detroit’s balanced production proved critical in overcoming Boston’s early advantage.

Paul George Shines, but Boston Falls

Paul George delivered an impressive performance in his Celtics debut, scoring 38 points.

However, his individual brilliance wasn’t enough to prevent Boston’s second-half collapse.

Jayson Tatum struggled offensively, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting.

The Celtics entered the fourth quarter in position to secure an opening-day victory but couldn’t withstand Detroit’s late surge.

A Statement Start for Detroit

Coming off a 60-win season, the Pistons entered the new campaign with high expectations.

Tuesday’s victory demonstrated the resilience and depth that could make Detroit dangerous in the Eastern Conference.

The Pistons begin the season 1–0 and will travel to Miami to face the Heat on Friday, October 23.

For Detroit, opening night was more than a win.

It was a reminder that this team can never be counted out.
