Jalen Duren Is Staying in Detroit: Pistons, All-NBA Center Agree to 5-Year, $200 Million Deal

DETROIT — The standoff is over. Jalen Duren is staying with the Detroit Pistons.

After months of negotiations that stretched through Media Day and into training camp, Duren has agreed to a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract with Detroit, his agent Chafie Fields told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The agreement came Thursday night just before Duren faced an 11:59 p.m. ET deadline to accept Detroit’s one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer. Signing that offer would have allowed Duren to play this season and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Instead, Duren chose long-term security in Detroit.

And the Pistons secured one of the most important pieces of their young core for the foreseeable future.

A Dramatic Standoff Finally Ends

Getting here was anything but simple.

Duren entered restricted free agency after a breakout 2025-26 season, and negotiations between the two sides lasted throughout the summer. ESPN reports Detroit made offers ranging from approximately $170 million to $190 million before eventually putting its fully guaranteed $200 million proposal on the table roughly two weeks before Thursday’s deadline.

Even that wasn’t immediately enough.

Duren remained unsigned when the Pistons held Media Day on Monday and did not report for the beginning of training camp. Detroit opened camp without its starting center while the possibility of Duren taking the qualifying offer — and potentially reaching unrestricted free agency next summer — continued hanging over the organization.

That possibility is now gone.

Rather than betting on himself with the one-year deal, Duren accepted Detroit’s standing $200 million proposal and committed to the Pistons for another five years.

Detroit Locks Up an All-NBA Center

The investment reflects just how important Duren has become to the franchise.

At only 22 years old, Duren is coming off the best season of his career. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, shooting 65% from the field while earning his first NBA All-Star selection and All-NBA Third Team honors.

His emergence helped Detroit win 60 games, capture the Central Division and earn the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season.

The contract also provides some clarity about what Detroit’s long-term core looks like.

Duren’s agreement comes shortly after the Pistons signed Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million extension, keeping two of Detroit’s most important young players under long-term deals.

For a team that has transitioned from rebuilding to competing near the top of the Eastern Conference, maintaining that young foundation was one of the biggest questions of the offseason.

Detroit now has its answer on Duren.

From Missing Media Day to Returning to the Pistons

The timing makes the conclusion even more dramatic.

Just days ago, Duren was absent from Media Day. Training camp started without him. Questions surrounding potential sign-and-trade scenarios and whether the relationship between the two sides could be repaired became part of the conversation surrounding the team.

Now the focus can return to basketball.

Duren will have time to rejoin the Pistons and begin preparing for the 2026-27 season. Detroit opens its preseason schedule Sunday, Oct. 5, against Phoenix.

Whether Duren is ready to participate immediately remains to be seen, but the uncertainty surrounding his future is over.

Jalen Duren is staying in Detroit — and the Pistons just made a $200 million commitment to ensure it stays that way.
