Pistons Raise Jalen Duren Offer to $200 Million, But Contract Standoff Remains Unresolved
The Detroit Pistons have reportedly put their biggest offer yet on the table for Jalen Duren.
According to reporting Monday attributed to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Detroit has increased its offer to five years and $200 million as the organization attempts to end a contract standoff that has stretched deep into the offseason. Despite the increased offer, Duren has not accepted the deal, and the two sides remain without an agreement.
The development is significant because $200 million is the total value Duren had reportedly been seeking. Just over a week ago, The Athletic reported that Detroit’s offer was in the five-year, $190 million range, while Duren wanted at least $200 million.
Now Detroit has apparently reached that headline number — and a deal still isn’t done.
Pistons and Duren Resume Communication
There is at least one encouraging development surrounding the negotiations.
Charania reported on ESPN’s NBA Today that communication between Duren and the Pistons has picked back up. But Detroit increasing its proposal to $200 million without immediately securing Duren’s signature suggests there may be more separating the sides than total contract value.
The precise structure of Detroit’s latest offer has not been publicly disclosed. That could be important because previous reporting indicated that options and other contract terms were among the unresolved issues between the parties.
It also follows reports that Duren has been unhappy with how negotiations have unfolded, adding another layer to what began primarily as a disagreement over contract value.
The Qualifying Offer Still Looms
The Pistons are also facing a ticking clock.
Duren has until October 1 to accept his approximately $9.6 million qualifying offer under the currently reported deadline. If he chooses that route, he would play the 2026-27 season on the one-year deal before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2027.
It would be a significant financial gamble considering Detroit is now reportedly offering $200 million in long-term security.
But Duren could also gain considerably more control over his future.
Sacramento continues to loom over the situation. The Kings have expressed interest in Duren, Detroit previously rebuffed sign-and-trade interest, and Sacramento could potentially create enough cap room to pursue him next summer if he reaches unrestricted free agency.
Media Day Could Be the Next Pressure Point
The timing makes the situation increasingly difficult for Detroit.
Training camp is approaching, and reports Monday indicated Duren’s participation in the Pistons’ upcoming Media Day is uncertain while his contract remains unresolved.
Detroit has already made a substantial financial commitment to another member of its young core, recently agreeing to a five-year, $155 million extension with Ausar Thompson.
Now the Pistons are trying to secure Duren alongside Thompson and Cade Cunningham.
Detroit Has Made Its Move — Now It’s Duren’s Turn
The Pistons have steadily increased their reported offer during negotiations. The latest move to five years and $200 million represents the clearest indication yet that Detroit wants to keep Duren long term.
But the absence of an agreement after reaching the $200 million mark also makes the next stage of negotiations particularly important.
There is no reported agreement, no accepted qualifying offer and no current trade or sign-and-trade deal as of September 21.
For now, Detroit has put $200 million on the table.
Whether that’s enough to repair the relationship and keep Jalen Duren in a Pistons uniform long term remains unresolved.
