The Kids Take Over: Tigers Explode for Seven Runs in 8th to Stun Rockies
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers’ 2026 season may not have unfolded the way they envisioned, but Saturday afternoon offered a pretty exciting glimpse of what could be coming next.
Detroit erased a three-run deficit with a massive seven-run eighth inning, storming past the Colorado Rockies for an 11-7 comeback victory at Comerica Park. The win was Detroit’s third straight and improved the Tigers to 69-79.
And it was Detroit’s young talent leading the charge.
Hao-Yu Lee Ignites — and Finishes — the Rally
Hao-Yu Lee opened the bottom of the eighth with a double as Detroit trailed 7-4.
By the time the inning was finished, Lee was back at the plate.
This time, he delivered a two-run triple, putting the finishing touches on an inning that completely flipped the game.
Lee finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Detroit collected 18 hits overall, with Max Clark and Eduardo Valencia also recording three-hit games, while Kevin McGonigle homered.
A Glimpse of Detroit’s Future
That’s what makes Saturday’s victory more interesting than simply another September win.
Detroit has increasingly turned toward its younger players down the stretch, and several of those players delivered together in one of the Tigers’ most dramatic victories of the season.
Lee. Clark. McGonigle. Valencia.
Those are names the organization hopes will become fixtures at Comerica Park for years to come.
Saturday provided a glimpse of what that could look like.
The Tigers became the first team since 2024 to have their leadoff hitter reach base in eight consecutive innings, and Saturday also marked the first time since Sept. 25, 2010 that Detroit overcame multiple deficits of at least three runs and still won.
Something to Build On
Detroit’s postseason aspirations may no longer define these final weeks.
Development does.
And if the Tigers’ young core can continue producing performances like Saturday’s, September becomes an opportunity to learn which players should be part of the foundation moving forward.
The Tigers have now won three straight and will have an opportunity to sweep Colorado Sunday at Comerica Park, with Jackson Jobe scheduled to start for Detroit.
Saturday belonged to the kids.
Down 7-4 in the eighth, Detroit didn’t fold. Its young core took over.
