Western Michigan Retains Victory Cannon With 21–14 Win Over Central Michigan, Remains Unbeaten in MAC Play

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Western Michigan continues to establish itself as one of the teams to beat in the Mid-American Conference.

The defending MAC champions defeated rival Central Michigan 21–14 Saturday afternoon at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, retaining the Victory Cannon and improving to 3–0 in conference play.

The Broncos controlled the first three quarters before surviving a late comeback attempt from the Chippewas.

The victory improved Western Michigan to 5–2 overall, while Central Michigan fell to 3–4 and 1–2 in MAC competition.

Broncos Build Commanding Lead

Western Michigan wasted little time establishing control.

The Broncos scored seven points in each of the first three quarters, building a 21–0 advantage entering the final period.

Western Michigan’s ability to control the game early forced Central Michigan to play from behind throughout the afternoon.

But the Chippewas weren’t finished.

Central Michigan Mounts Fourth-Quarter Comeback

Central Michigan finally broke through early in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Angel Flores connected with Jaden Allen for a 32-yard touchdown with 13:52 remaining, cutting Western Michigan’s lead to 21–7.

The Chippewas continued battling and eventually found the end zone again.

Jadyn Glasser scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds remaining, bringing Central Michigan within seven points.

However, Western Michigan survived the late push to secure the rivalry victory.

The comeback fell short, but Central Michigan’s fourth-quarter effort demonstrated the competitiveness that makes this rivalry significant.

Victory Cannon Stays With Western Michigan

The Victory Cannon is more than another trophy.

It represents one of the state’s longstanding college football rivalries, bringing together two programs that regularly compete for regional bragging rights and MAC positioning.

For Western Michigan, retaining the trophy adds another accomplishment to an increasingly promising season.

The Broncos are now undefeated through three conference games and remain positioned to compete for another MAC championship.

Central Michigan Still Has Work Ahead

Despite the loss, Central Michigan showed resilience after falling behind by three touchdowns.

Head coach Matt Drinkall praised his team’s determination following the game, highlighting its willingness to battle until the final play.

But moral victories won’t improve the Chippewas’ conference standing.

Central Michigan must find ways to start faster and avoid the kind of early deficit that proved costly against Western Michigan.

The Chippewas will host Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, October 24, looking to get back on track.

Western Michigan Faces Another Important Test

The Broncos’ next challenge comes Saturday, October 24, when they travel to face Toledo.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon Eastern.

The matchup carries conference implications as Western Michigan attempts to maintain its unbeaten MAC record.

With the season entering its most important stretch, every conference victory becomes increasingly valuable.

MCSN Take: Western Michigan Is Building Something

Western Michigan deserves more attention than it’s receiving.

The Broncos are defending conference champions, undefeated in MAC play and continuing to win meaningful rivalry games.

Saturday wasn’t a flawless performance. Allowing Central Michigan to make the contest interesting in the fourth quarter showed that Western Michigan still has areas to improve.

But winning rivalry games on the road matters.

If the Broncos continue taking care of business, another MAC championship appearance could be within reach.

And for Central Michigan, the message is equally clear: Playing one strong quarter isn’t enough to beat a championship-caliber conference opponent.
