Auburn Dismisses Star Linebacker Xavier Atkins as Former All-SEC Defender Plans Transfer

Auburn has parted ways with standout linebacker Xavier Atkins following a suspension that kept him out of Saturday's upset victory over Georgia.

Atkins, a first-team All-SEC selection in 2025, is no longer listed on Auburn's roster and has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal when eligible.

The junior recorded 37 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception in five games this season.

Auburn coach Alex Golesh previously indicated the situation would be handled internally. The specific circumstances surrounding Atkins' departure have not been publicly explained.

The Tigers now face the challenge of replacing one of their most productive defensive players.

MCSN's Take

Losing a player of Atkins' caliber is significant, particularly for a program trying to build momentum after beating Georgia.

But football programs have responsibilities that extend beyond what happens on Saturdays.

Without knowing the circumstances, it would be irresponsible to judge either Atkins or Auburn's decision.

What we can say is that Auburn has lost a major defensive contributor, and the rest of its roster must respond.
