No. 9 UCLA Loses Nico Iamaleava for Season as Big Ten Title Hopes Face Major Test

The ninth-ranked UCLA Bruins are undefeated, but their path toward a Big Ten championship has become significantly more difficult.

Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering a serious knee injury against Oregon.

UCLA enters this weekend at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Big Ten play. Backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach stepped into the starting role and helped lead the Bruins to a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin.

Dieffenbach completed 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards in that game.

The Bruins now prepare to host Michigan State on Saturday, October 24.

MCSN's Take

UCLA has earned its place among the nation's top teams. But losing a starting quarterback in the middle of an undefeated season changes everything.

Dieffenbach showed he can manage the offense against Wisconsin. Now he has to prove he can consistently lead a championship contender.

For Michigan State, this presents an opportunity. For UCLA, it's a test of whether the program is bigger than one player.
