Red Wings Contract Standoff Continues as Simon Edvinsson Meets With Management Without a Deal

Detroit’s young defenseman remains unsigned despite a face-to-face meeting with interim general manager Shawn Horcoff, while interest from other NHL teams continues to grow.

DETROIT — October 21, 2026 — The Detroit Red Wings are running out of time to resolve one of their most important contract negotiations.

Restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned despite recently meeting face-to-face with interim general manager Shawn Horcoff.

According to TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, Edvinsson and his agent, J.P. Barry, met with Horcoff over the weekend to discuss the ongoing contract dispute.

However, the meeting reportedly did not produce an agreement.

With the December 1 signing deadline approaching, Detroit faces increasing pressure to resolve the situation or potentially explore other options.

Face-to-Face Meeting Fails to Produce Agreement

LeBrun reported that the two sides met in person after weeks of uncertainty surrounding Edvinsson’s future.

While the meeting represented an opportunity to discuss their differences directly, it did not appear to bring negotiations to a conclusion.

LeBrun suggested Edvinsson may now view a trade as a possible solution, although he stopped short of reporting that the defenseman had formally requested one.

That distinction is important.

Edvinsson has not been confirmed to have submitted a formal trade request, and Detroit has not announced any agreement to move him.

Other NHL Teams Are Paying Attention

The contract dispute has attracted interest from around the league.

According to LeBrun’s October 21 reporting, as many as 10 teams have been involved in trade discussions concerning Edvinsson.

The Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks are reportedly among the interested clubs.

However, interest does not mean a trade is imminent.

Detroit continues to value Edvinsson highly, and any potential deal would likely require a substantial return.

Horcoff Wants Edvinsson in Detroit

Despite the ongoing speculation, Horcoff has publicly maintained that retaining Edvinsson is the organization’s preferred outcome.

On October 14, Horcoff stated that he had no interest in trading the defenseman and wanted to reach an agreement.

The Red Wings selected Edvinsson sixth overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and have invested years in his development.

At 23 years old, Edvinsson has already established himself as an important part of Detroit’s defensive group.

Last season, he recorded nine goals and 16 assists in 72 games while averaging more than 22 minutes of ice time.

Those numbers illustrate why Detroit is reluctant to move him.

December 1 Deadline Creates Urgency

The biggest concern is the calendar.

As an unsigned restricted free agent, Edvinsson must sign a contract by December 1 to remain eligible to play in the NHL during the 2026–27 season.

Missing that deadline would keep him out of NHL games for the remainder of the season.

For Detroit, that would mean losing an important contributor for an entire campaign without receiving anything in return on the ice.

It also places additional pressure on Horcoff to determine whether an agreement is realistically achievable.

MCSN Take: Detroit Cannot Afford Another Major Setback

The Red Wings have spent years developing young talent with the expectation that those players would eventually become the foundation of a competitive team.

Edvinsson is exactly the type of player that development process is supposed to produce.

A 23-year-old, 6-foot-6 defenseman capable of handling significant minutes is not easily replaced.

Trading him simply because negotiations have become difficult would be a dangerous decision unless Detroit receives exceptional value in return.

At the same time, allowing the dispute to reach December without a resolution would create another problem.

Horcoff needs to find common ground with Edvinsson’s representatives or establish a realistic alternative before the deadline becomes a crisis.

The bottom line: Detroit wants to keep Simon Edvinsson, but the contract standoff continues. With trade interest growing and December 1 approaching, the Red Wings face an increasingly important decision about one of their most valuable young players.
