Red Wings Recall Goaltender Michal Postava Following Dominant Start in Grand Rapids

The 24-year-old goaltender is joining Detroit’s Western Conference road trip, but questions remain about what prompted the move.

DETROIT — October 22, 2026 — The Detroit Red Wings are making a move between the pipes.

Goaltender Michal Postava has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins following an impressive start to the 2026–27 American Hockey League season.

Griffins head coach Dan Watson confirmed the planned promotion Wednesday night following Grand Rapids’ 4–3 victory over the Manitoba Moose.

Postava is expected to join Detroit during its Western Conference road trip, which includes Thursday night’s matchup against the Vancouver Canucks.

Postava Has Been Outstanding in Grand Rapids

The 24-year-old Czech goaltender has made a strong case for an NHL opportunity.

Through four games this season, Postava has recorded:

  • 4–0–0 record

  • 1.25 goals-against average

  • .954 save percentage

Those numbers have made him one of the American Hockey League’s top-performing goaltenders early in the season.

His success isn’t limited to this year, either.

During the 2025–26 campaign, Postava posted a 17–6–0 record, a 1.71 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage across 25 regular-season appearances with Grand Rapids.

He also recorded four shutouts, setting a Griffins rookie franchise record.

Postava’s development has made him an increasingly intriguing prospect in Detroit’s organization.

Why Are the Red Wings Calling Him Up?

That’s the biggest unanswered question.

Detroit currently has John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov on its NHL goaltending roster.

As of the initial reporting, the organization had not confirmed whether either goaltender was dealing with an injury or whether Postava’s promotion was primarily related to roster management.

Tarasov started Detroit’s most recent game against Seattle, while Gibson previously appeared against San Jose.

Without additional information from the Red Wings, it would be premature to suggest either veteran is injured or that Postava is replacing one of them permanently.

What is clear is that Detroit now has another goaltender available during a demanding stretch of its schedule.

An Opportunity Years in the Making

Postava joined the Red Wings organization in June 2025 after building his reputation in Czech professional hockey.

He quickly adapted to the North American game and became a dependable presence for Grand Rapids.

His strong play continued into the current season, earning him AHL Player of the Week honors earlier this month.

Now, he has an opportunity to experience the NHL environment firsthand.

Whether that opportunity leads to his NHL debut remains to be seen.

MCSN Take: Postava Has Earned This Opportunity

Let’s give credit where it’s due.

Postava has done everything a developing goaltender can do to get an NHL organization’s attention.

He’s winning games, limiting goals and consistently giving Grand Rapids a chance to compete.

The Red Wings would be wise to take a serious look at what they have in him.

That doesn’t mean Detroit should immediately change its goaltending plans or rush him into a starting role.

But with the organization continuing to evaluate its long-term future in net, Postava deserves consideration.

The bottom line: Postava has earned his promotion through performance. Now the question is whether this recall is simply additional depth for Detroit’s road trip or the beginning of a larger NHL opportunity.

Motor City Sports Network will continue following Detroit’s goaltending situation as more information becomes available.
